RIP - Calon (28.07.10)

It's so sad to hear that Calon TV have gone into voluntrary
liquidation this week (see the
BBC).
Calon
were born out of Siriol, of course, and Robin Lyons and
the gang recently brought us two lovely stop-motion
series in the
form of Igam Ogam and
Hana's Helpline. These were productions
with terrific design and lots of cute detail. They had great
heart.
And Zoo
Factor has been a jolly puppet spoof too. But at the end
of the day, it all boils down to cold hard cash, and that
BBC
news story tells us a much hoped-for investment in the
company's future simply did not materialise, so the
company has shut itself down...
It's been so tough out there in recent years, what with
the big
devolution of kids tv, and all that financial strife
to work around.
Cosgrove Hall are no more, HOT Animation are cooling off,
and so many more UK producers have slowed with them.
There seems to be less and less production news to write
about each month.
But The Hound is a glass half-full kind of guy, so you could
argue that the UK animation industry has always been
somewhat
precarious, with lots of independent little studios rising
and falling
and emerging from the ashes. I guess we're just on another
turn
of the old production millwheel...
