Ewe's
your favourite?
(18.11.11)

Who's your favourite ever British animated character?
- Is it Roobarb
or DangerMouse, Mr Benn or Gromit, Morph, Chorlton,
Postman Pat
or Ivor the Engine? - It's a tough question to answer,
but the folks
behind the British
Animation Awards want you to get thinking,
because next year's ceremony is going to give us an answer,
one way or the other, and decided by the Great British Public.
Here's the BAA press spiel:
"Given the current debate about the future of animation
production in the UK, this year BAA is running
an online
poll and discussion forum to determine the UK's Favourite
Ever British Animated Character of all time. To celebrate
the rich heritage of notable and well-loved animated
characters in this country, BAA is asking for nominations
across TV, online and advertising for consideration
for
their shortlist which will be voted for by the public
in the
New Year. The winner will be announced at next year's
British Animation Awards ceremony..."
As you probably know already, the BAAs are held biannually
to
celebrate the best of British animation in a whole raft
of categories.
The next awards night will be held in London on Thursday
March
15th 2012 at the British Film Institute.
So who'll top this special vote? - That's a tough call.
Bagpuss was
was the Big Winner last
time anything like this was put out to the
public, but that Channel4 vote wasn't Brit-centric
and a lot has
happened in the intervening years. Maybe one of our newer
guys
or gals might steal that moggy's crown, maybe Bob the
Builder
or Peppa Pig, or even those ubiquitous money-crunching
Meerkats. It's not so easy to get a character out there
nowadays,
with so many channels, platforms and niches to reach out
to and
cross over, and it will be intriguing to see if nostalgia wins
the day
again. We'll find out one way or t'other, next March!...
